It Was So Good To See You: Guide to Guest Stars (Week of January 22)

There weren’t quite as many familiar faces this past week on my favorite TV shows as in the past; but still enough to catch my attention.

Let’s start with actor Dylan Baker, who appeared on Tuesday’s episode of White Collar, playing the dean at a private school who is actually embezzling money from the scholarship fund. Dylan has appeared in TV shows like Damages, The Good Wife, and Burn Notice among many others.

Also in that episode, Graham Phillips played a prep school student who brought the case to the attention of the FBI. He’s best known for his role on The Good Wife and has also appeared on Crossing Jordan and The King of Queens

5 Things TV Goodness Learned on Monday 12/5

Warning: Spoilers Discussed

  • Misha Collins is returning to Supernatural (as expected). He’ll guest-star in episode 17 and will appear in at least two more episodes. One question: how will his return go down? Thanks to Laura Prudom over at AOLTV, who reached Misha himself for the Good Word, we know it’s definitely Cas that’ll be back but he’ll be “somewhat changed.” As we all remember, Sam and Dean lost their very own angel of the Lord at the beginning of “Hello, Cruel World” after Cas’ body couldn’t handle housing all those nasty Leviathans. Supernatural fandom: How happy were you to see this news?

Deja View: The Closer’s Mark Pellegrino

I remember when I first heard about Mark Pellegrino’s arc on The CloserIt was a while back but I got so excited. I’m such a fan (and you’d better be too if we’re going to stay friends) so I thought I’d take this opportunity to show some appreciation for his other work. I’ve really enjoyed seeing him spar with Kyra Sedgwick’s Brenda Leigh Johnson, but I’ll get to that later. Let’s look at some recent shows where’s he’s made an idelible impression.

Three Things I Loved about Suits “Inside Track”

What another fabulous episode of USA Network’s Suits, right? This show hooked me right from the beginning and it’s holding my attention, mostly because I love the cast; the legal drama is actually pretty exciting; and the Harvey/Mike mentor-mentee relationship is awesome. There were three things I loved about this week’s episode, “Inside Track.”

None of the action takes place in a courtroom.

The case was all corporate intrigue and took place in offices and boardrooms and in front of some beautiful cars and sleek-looking engines. Sign me up for more episodes like this one. There was no judge or opening and closing arguments; there were a lot of shady moves; and two guys (Harvey and Stensland) trying to out duel each other. And Harvey’s morals came into play again. He appreciates the beauty of a car; and when he heard the wannabe CEO was going to go for the money and sell the manufacturing part of the business to a European company, Specter didn’t stand for it. Of course, he says he had the firm in mind (and he did) but I really do believe he didn’t want to see a bunch of American jobs lost due to unnecessary corporate greed. But I love that Harvey has the balls to first, find his own CEO to upend Stensland; and then when that didn’t work, he found someone to buy the whole damn company. Just brilliant. And he had Mike’s photographic memory and ability to quickly spout off legalese to back him up. Those two are just a powerhouse team.

Finale Preview: Does Alicia Finally Choose Will on The Good Wife?

If you read TV Guide Magazine (on stands now) you are privy to some very exciting spoilerific information. And who does the teasing? The one and only Josh Charles. We don’t usually get too much from him - in fact, I can’t even remember the last time he gave an interview about The Good Wife - so this is that much more exciting. Ok, enough teasing from me. I’ll share what I think I know.

Moment of Goodness: The Talking Lion on The Good Wife

Who knew a little Talking (and dancing) Lion would have such an impact? I don’t think I’m the only one who had to Tivo back and watch the scene again. The first time I was delighted and fascinated by the lion. But I had to go back and watch the scene again and actually listen to the dialogue. The lion makes the scene memorable (and I watched it again and again), but the actors doing the work in that scene make it my moment of goodness.

Guest Star Goodness: Titus Welliver on The Good Wife

Titus Welliver isn’t just a guest star, he’s a recurring star. It’s a pleasure to see on The Good Wife, even if he’s causing all sorts of trouble for Peter and/or Alicia Florrick. Not only has he formed a strategic alliance with Wendy Scott-Carr, but he’s plotting to get Cary to stay in the State’s Attorney’s office.

TV Goodness All-Star 2010: Titus Welliver by Kara Howland

I watch a lot of TV. There are shows I’m fanatical about and actors I all but worship. My next pick is Titus Welliver. Is there a show he hasn’t guest-starred on?

I’m sure on some level I noticed him before, but I started paying attention with Deadwood. I feel like he’s ubiquitous – on both the big and small screen – so let’s just focus on what he’s done this year.

Lost. Ah, the Man in Black. I loved every minute of seeing him on screen. His antagonistic relationship with Jacob was both confusing and mysterious. Just like the show itself.

The Closer. He took what could have been a stock character and infused some life and mystery into him.

The Good Wife. I don’t know what they’ve put in the water over at that show, but their guest stars have the goods. Glenn Childs is such a great character for both Alicia and Peter to play off of. I want to hate him but there’s something in his portrayal that just makes me want to keep watching and dig beneath the surface. When Peter’s re-election campaign really heats up, I can’t wait to see more of Glenn.

Sons of Anarchy. I’m not sure why I don’t watch this show because I love almost everything FX does. I guess I’ll just say I’m sure he’s a force to be reckoned with onscreen. Oh, and I just put the first season in my netflix queue.

I’m looking forward to seeing where Titus Welliver will pop up next. Maybe someone will smarten up and find/write him a series regular gig. The last time was Deadwood, so it had better be damn good.

TV Ties: The Town by Kara Howland and Tina Charles

We’re starting a new feature called TV Ties. As we’re very devoted to keeping the discussion here strictly about television, we had to devise a way to sneak a movie or two into the dialogue. And what better way to do that then to examine which small screen stars are sticking their toes into the features pond.

Last night we went to a screening of The Town, co-written, starring, and directed by Ben Affleck. Bank robber Doug Macray and his crew take pride in their work. They get in, get out, and leave no evidence. But when their MO changes and they take a hostage, Doug knows it’s time to leave it all behind. With Doug’s needy ex and a rampaging FBI agent in hot pursuit, Doug plots the final heist. Will the crew be able to pull off the biggest payday of their lives and get out alive? Check out the trailer here. The film opens nationwide today.

Quite a few big screen actors either start in TV or get their big break there. And when they make that transition from the small to the big screen we’re both happy and sad. Happy that they’re making their dreams come true (or in any case making more money) and sad to see them leave some of our favorite TV shows.
