Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt Preview

The gold standard, and aside from Hallmark Hall of Fame flicks, last remaining network TV movie series, Jesse Stone, debuts its latest installment, Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt, this Sunday night at 9 pm/8c on CBS.

For the uninitiated, Stone is based on the Robert B. Parker character, and the movies have been a mix of based-on-novels and new stories. Series star Tom Selleck has the film rights to all of the books and he’s very lovingly adapted the character and the source material into an impeccable set of movies.

TV Tidbits: Tom Selleck in Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost

One of the side effects of Blue Bloods’ success is that it ensures the gold-standard movies of the week based on the late Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone book series will continue to have a home on CBS. Tom Selleck, ever savvy, made continuing the series a component of his deal, same as he did over at NBC when he booked Las Vegas — he had to be allowed time off to shoot the films. This series of TV movies has been around since 2005, and I love, love, love them. Innocents Lost, the seventh film, premieres on CBS tonight at 9 pm EDT.

Get With the Program: Blue Bloods

So I spent the past two weekends catching up on Blue Bloods. Yes, I had every single episode on my DVR. How did I know it would be worth my time? I didn’t but with a cast like Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Bridget Moynahan I knew I had to give it a try. And I’m really glad I did. I’ve got some issues (I’ll get to those later), but this is a great show.

It is so nice to see Magnum P.I. back on the small screen. Yes, I know he’s had other roles since then (Friends anyone? or Jesse Stone?) but I like seeing him as an authority figure. As New York’s top cop, he brings so much integrity and heart to the job. I love that the entire family is involved in the “family business” in some way but I like that Frank refuses to give any of his kids special treatment. I also love that he refuses to be the mayor’s puppet. It’s nice to see a character like this on television.

Renewals A Go-Go at CBS and CW

Ah, Nina (Tassler). Way to save face after the supreme goof of canning Moonlight in the spring of 08. Three Rivers was a bust, but she kept on, and thankfully Alex O’Loughlin is a savvy guy who stayed in the CBS fold, and the network found a fit, giving Hawaii Five-0 a full season order last week. A franchise based on successful legacy show, rejiggered with alumni from two (three if you count Jean Smart, and why wouldn’t you) very successful series, plus a by-the-numbers procedural format, was a sure bet. I’m so glad the ratings aligned, and for this cast. Anything that keeps Alex O’Loughlin (and his band of merry 5-0ers) on my TV through the spring is a good thing. Kudos, y’all. They’ve passed the first hurdle by getting a pick up for the back nine. Now they can find their rhythm and settle in for a CBS long haul (I hope).
